The International Journal of Ultrasound and Applied Technologies in Perioperative Care (JUTPC) is a peer-reviewed journal covering the use of ultrasound and other applied technologies in perioperative care.
Ultrasound has a definitive role in day-to-day clinical practice due to associated advantages like precision, high quality and safety in perioperative care. Also, the technological evolutions take us beyond our capabilities and improve the quality of patient care. The advancements in ultrasound and other technologies are growing at outrageous pace and it’s difficult to speculate what the future may bring. These advancements may be in application, computation, information technology, human-computer adaptation, monitors, equipments, data management systems, simulations, virtual labs, learning tools, wireless networking or artificial intelligence technology, and so on, the list is endless.
The journal aims to publish articles arising out of original research, specialized topics, review articles, editorials and descriptions of new ultrasound techniques and technologies. In addition the journal includes pictorial reviews, letters to the editor, book reviews, and notices of meetings and courses. In this way the journal hopes to provide a forum for the stimulation of new developments, clinical practices, and research in the application of ultrasound and other applied technologies in modern perioperative medicine.
Manuscripts prepared according to the "Uniform Requirements of a Biomedical Journal" are invited for editorial review and publication. Published papers are the views of the respective authors and do not necessarily represent the views of the editorial board or publishing house.

Authors are advised to read the following information before considering any submission:

1. EDITORIAL POLICIES FOR THE AUTHORS Back to Top

Ethical and Humane Considerations
The Journal of Ultrasound and applied Technologies (JUTPC) is committed to the humane and ethical conduct of all studies involving living subjects.

Human Subject Studies
It is the responsibility of the authors to assure that all clinical investigations detailed in manuscripts submitted to JUTPC are conducted in accordance with the ethical standards of the Committee on Human Experimentation of the institution in which the experiments were done or in accordance with the ethical standards of the Helsinki Declaration of 1975. All clinical trials involving human subjects must be registered, retrospectively if necessary, before being considered for publication.

Animal Studies
In studies/experiments with animal subjects, it is the responsibility of the authors to assure that their study/experimental procedures comply with the guiding principles in the “Care and Use of Animals” (published each month in the "Information for Authors" of the American Journal of Physiology or available online at http://www.nap.edu/books/0309053773/html/).
Authors must briefly explain the measures taken to ensure compliance with established guidelines for humane use and care of laboratory animals, citing the origin of these guidelines (e.g. institution’s Animal Care Committee, US Department Agriculture, NIH, National Research Council, others). Authors are also expected to document that their study has approval by the local/appropriate institutional animal care and oversight committee. The authors must indicate this in the “Methods” section of the manuscript.

Data Protection
It is the exclusive responsibility of the authors to ensure that the patient’s anonymity be completely protected. It is the authors’ responsibility to ensure that identifying information within written descriptions, photographs (authors should mask patient’s eyes in such a manner as to prevent identification) or pedigrees are not published. If such information is included as essential scientific information, the authors must obtain and submit written specific informed consent of the patient or patient’s guardian in case of minor to publish such photographs in the print and electronic versions of the journal.

Authorship
Each author should contribute substantially to the intellectual content of the work from inception to publication of the article. Following conditions must be met to justify the authorship:
1. Author participates in the conception, design, data collection, study procedures, analysis and interpretation of data related to study
2. Author contributes in preparation of draft manuscript and revision of the article, and
3. Author approves the manuscript and any subsequent revisions.
Also, authors must read and agree to the general terms and conditions of the journal before submitting a manuscript for publication.

Conflict of Interest/financial Disclosure
Authors are required to disclose any financial interests, direct or indirect (dual commitment), that might affect the conduct or reporting of the submitted work. Such financial interests may take the form of corporate appointments, consultancies, stock ownership, other equity interests or patent licensing arrangements with companies mentioned in or related to the subject matter of the article being submitted. A full disclosure is desirable. Such financial interests should be (a) disclosed to the Editor-in-Chief in the cover letter, (b) on a separate conflict of interest page in the manuscript, and (c) on the conflict of interest forms accompanying the article at the time of submission. The conflicts of interest disclosed on the conflict of interest form should be the same as those disclosed on the conflict of interest page in the manuscript. It is the responsibility of the first author and corresponding author to ensure that all coauthors provide the necessary disclosure information. Conflict of Interest forms can be found on the online submission site: (http://www.jaypeejournals.com) and on the JUTPC web site (http://www.ijutpc.com). Conflict of interest information will be published with all accepted manuscripts.

American Association of Medical Colleges Guidelines
In September 2006, the ASBMR Council voted to adopt the AAMC “Principles for Protecting Integrity in the Conduct and Reporting of Clinical Trials.” Please find a list of these guidelines at the AAMC website. Authors are strongly advised to read the guidelines to ensure that the manuscript and study comply with these principles. We now require that corresponding author initial a line on the conflict of interest form stating that the study has complied with a prespecified analysis. Additionally, each manuscript must disclose, on the conflict of interest page, the role each author has played in conducting the study and in preparation of the manuscript.

Duplicate Publication
The Journal will not accept duplicate publication of scientific data. Manuscripts submitted to the JUTPC should not have been published/ accepted for publication or simultaneously submitted for publication somewhere else. The “possible” duplicate manuscript should be submitted with the original publication (s) and the authors should provide documentation/statement to justify the originality of the current manuscript.

Prior Publication
The Journal will accept original manuscripts that contain material that has not been reported elsewhere, except in the form of an abstract of not more than 400 words, or an alternative short communication. If any preliminary report other than an abstract has been published or submitted, copies must be submitted with the manuscript and this must be noted in the cover letter to the editor. Prior abstract presentations must be described in a footnote to the title. Initial submissions must be accompanied by the copyright assignment form, with original signatures of all authors.

Shared Material
As a condition for publication, cell lines, hybridomas, DNA clones, antibodies, biological reagents and animal models described in papers published in the Journal will be made available to scientists in non-commercial institutions for purposes of replicating the reported studies.

2. EDITORIAL REVIEW PROCESS Back to Top
The Editorial team has established a process under which all manuscripts would undergo an initial review by the editorial staff, comprising of an editor, one Associate Editor, and at least one member of the Editorial board to ensure the manuscript meets certain criteria. Under this scheme, some of the new submissions may be returned to the authors without formal review, for reasons that may include:
• Insufficient direct relevance to endocrine surgery,
• Inadequate or unethical methodology,
• Inadequate statistical power or assessment.

All other successful manuscripts will undergo the peer review process, being referred to one Editor or Associate Editor, who will then identify the reviewers (from the preapproved list of reviewers) to review the manuscript. Reviews and decisions on manuscripts in which the Editor, Associate Editor or any member of Editorial board is a coauthor, will be managed independently by another Editor/Associate editor, in conjunction with a member of the Editorial board.
Corresponding authors will receive a full response detailing any changes required and the decision about the acceptance or otherwise of the manuscript by the Reviewers and Editorial team. Authors who wish to object or appeal an unfavourable decision must do so within two months of the decision of Editorial board. All decisions whether an article is published or not will be the final authority of the editorial board.

Responsibilities of Reviewers:
External peer reviewers should disclose any potential conflicts of interest that could bias their opinions of the manuscript to the Editor-in-Chief.
All submitted manuscripts are carefully peer reviewed prior to publication. However, it’s the sole responsibility and liability of the authors for all work submitted, opinions expressed, funding and other conflict of interest involved regarding any particular article or advertisement. Any issue raised will be directed to the concerned corresponding author/party. The Editorial board and publishers accepts no legal (including medicolegal) responsibility for the content and opinions expressed in this journal.

3. Conflict of Interest Page
Authors should disclose all direct or indirect (dual commitment) financial interests that might be construed as affecting the conduct or reporting of the submitted work. Conflicts include relevant corporate appointments, consultancies, stock ownership, other equity interests or patent licensing arrangements. The conflict of interest page is a declaration form submitted as a statement such as the one below.
If no author has a conflict, the statement should read: All authors have no conflicts of interest.
The conflict of interest statement should read, in case there is a conflict: Dr. Y serves as a consultant for X Company; Dr. Z is an employee of Y Company; and Dr. A owns stock in Company Z. All other authors have no conflicts of interest.

4. Structured Abstract
The purpose of the structured abstract is to concisely present the data contained in the manuscript and it should be self-explanatory. It should not be more than 250 words. The format should consist of: Introduction, Methods, Results and Conclusions. A list of keywords must be included at the end of abstract. Abstract is not required for case reports, historical, special articles and ‘How I do It’.

5. Text of the Manuscript/article
It is extremely important to maintain clarity and succinctness in presentation of material. Manuscript should follow the format to include Introduction, Material and Methods, Results and Discussion (IMRD) and end with a summary paragraph. Authors need to avoid unnecessary repetition in their manuscripts. Do not repeat the results and conclusions in the Introduction section. Conclusions should not be stated anywhere in the Results section. Results should not be restated throughout the Discussion section. Avoid simply restating the Results in the Discussion rather than explaining how each result advances the overall conclusions of the study. The final part of the Discussion should refer back to the rationale for the study and explain how the findings have advanced the issue. We strongly recommend the authors to employ the format and guidelines detailed below.
The International system of Units (SI units) is recommended. It is desirable to include appropriate conversion factors to aid the reader.

Introduction
This should clearly state the purpose of the study and identify what issues are going to be addressed. It may make reference to prior publications and address any controversy or deficiency if any.

Materials and Methods
This section should describe the selection of the observational or experimental subjects (human or nonhuman) and methods and materials used, including sample size and statistical approaches. Commonly used techniques or methods should be correctly referenced and described in brief. However, unique experiments, methods, technique should be described in adequate detail to allow other researchers/workers to understand the methods and if necessary be able to conduct a similar study.
Please refer to section on Ethical and Humane Considerations and the information regarding mandatory clinical trial registration for studies involving living subjects.

Results
This section should succinctly state the results without any lengthy discussion or interpretation of individual data. Data should be presented using tables, illustrations and graphs. Data in table or illustration form should be referenced in the text, not repeated (e.g. detailed information should not be given in text and tables). Statistical tests should be clearly defined and statistical significance should be shown in both figures and tables with the help of superscripts such as a, b, c, rather than *, ¶, # or other non-sequential symbols.

Discussion
The Discussion should focus on the new and important findings of the study. The observations should be related to other relevant studies in a logical sequence. It should summarize, but not repeat the Results. The Discussion should end with a summary of the data and conclusions. The conclusions should be linked with the aims and objectives of the study and should clearly state whether the objective was achieved. Limitations of the study should also be mentioned.

Acknowledgments
Authors are encouraged to acknowledge those who contributed to the manuscript but who do not qualify for inclusion as authors- technical help, writing assistance, etc. Authors should acknowledge in the manuscript all support for the work, including funding, equipment and drugs.

References
The author is responsible for the merit, accuracy and completeness of the references. Any unpublished work or more than three years old abstracts should not be cited. Normally up to 30 references are allowed. Place all the references (double-spaced) at the end of the manuscript. Please ensure that the references listed in reference section do appear numerically and are in order in which they are first mentioned in the text.
Avoid citing authors name in the text as reference. When there is more than one author, use ‘J and colleagues’ style rather ‘et al’ in the body of text. In reference section, if there are more than three authors, name only first three authors and then use et al. Refer to the List of Journals indexed in Index Medicus for abbreviations of journal names, or access the list at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/tsd/serials/terms_cond.html.

References to journal articles should be in the following format:
Authors (Surname first, list all authors and/or editors up to 6; if more than 6, list the first 3 and “et al”); Title of paper; Journal name as abbreviated in Index Medicus; Year of publication; Volume number; Issue number; and Inclusive page numbers.

References to books should include
Authors (Surname first, list all authors and/or editors up to 6; if more than 6, list the first 3 and “et al); Chapter title; Editor; Title of book; Year of publication; City; and Publisher.
Volume and edition numbers, specific pages, and name of translator should be included when appropriate when citing a book.

6. Figures/Photographs/Illustrations and Tables
Tables and illustrations should not include data that can be given in the text in one or two sentences. Tables and illustrations should complement each other and not repeat the text. Type each table on a separate page. Submit tables separately from the manuscript text file. Use Arabic numerals to number tables and cite the tables consecutively in the text. Multipart figures must be labelled (i.e. A, B, C). Please use small, capital letters and place them in Arial font when using figure headings/labels. Each table must contain all necessary information in the table title. Each table must be accompanied by explanatory legends, including definition of any abbreviations.

Illustrations or Figures
Do not submit the original drawings or roentgenograms. Illustrations or figures must be submitted electronically as high resolution individually numbered TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) or EPS (Encapsulated Postscript) files online. The authors must obtain and keep on file a written signed permission from the patients and in case of minor from their parents when submitting the photographs of the patient. A scanned copy of this specific consent form must be submitted along with the figure files. The authors must obtain permission to reproduce figures, tables, text, and abstracts if taken from previously published material. Written permission must be obtained from the original copyright holder (generally the publisher or the sponsoring society holds the copyright of an article, not the author) of the journal or book concerned. An appropriate credit line should be included in the figure legend or table footnote, and full publication information in the reference list. Written permission must be obtained from the author of any unpublished material cited from other investigator/s. Please submit figures that are close to publication size to ensure the clarity and legibility when figure is reproduced or reduced in size.

Color figures: The journal accepts color figures and photographs which add to the quality of the article.
Photographs: Colored or black and white digital photographs must be submitted as jpeg files with number as file name e.g. Figure 1, Figure 5.

7. Legends to Figures/Photographs/Illustrations and Tables
All legends of figures/photographs/illustrations/tables must be submitted starting on a separate page. The top of each page should also be labelled with that particular figure/photograph/illustration/table’s number, as well as the primary author’s name and title of the manuscript. Legends should be brief and specific.

Abbreviations
Use only standard abbreviations for units of measurement, and approved abbreviations when citing journals in your manuscript’s Reference section. The following sources contain complete listings of abbreviations.
• American Medical Association (AMA) Manual of Style.
• List of Serials Indexed for Online Users, published by The National Library of Medicine Click on the heading titled "Databases and Resources", and then on the subheading "LocatorPlus".

Revised Manuscripts
We will make every effort to reduce the time between submission and first response and between submission of revised manuscript and second response. In general, failure to adequately deal with issues raised by reviewers with one revision will preclude acceptance of a manuscript. If a revision is not submitted within 90 days, the file on that manuscript will be considered closed.

Copyright
IJUTPC holds the copyright of all the editorial content published in this journal. All accepted manuscripts and their accompanying illustrations become a permanent property of IJUTPC and may not be published anywhere in part or full, in print or electronically without written permission from IJUTPC.

Reprint
No free reprints will be provided to the author or others. The journal can be subscribed at a discount of 25 percent by the author of the article in IJUTPC.

Disclosures
Authors should include all relevant information regarding conflicts of interest and financial disclosure statement.

5. MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION Back to Top

Manuscript Submission
Manuscripts are received with the understanding that they contain original data that is not previously published or is being considered for publication elsewhere. Only individuals who have made significant contributions to the manuscript should be listed as authors, all other contributions should be noted in acknowledgments.

Submitting Manuscripts Electronically
Please log on to www.ms.ijutpc.com and get registered in order to electronically submit a manuscript. Authors will be required to provide contact information, including telephone, fax and e-mail address to get registered. Please do not try to get register in the system more than once as this will create your duplicate profile and may cause technical difficulties in accessing the online system. The system may assume that you are the designated corresponding author and all communications concerning the manuscript will then be directed to you.
Although no printed copies of your manuscript are required, the format of the manuscript remains the same as with the paper submissions. Signed Transfer of Copyright statements are required by the publisher and Editorial board as a condition of publication and should be submitted electronically with the manuscript, or fax, or attachment with e-mail. Authors must submit the original transfer of copyright form by post to the Editor-in-Chief after submitting the manuscript.

Submitting Manuscripts by Mail
IJUTPC requires all manuscripts to be submitted electronically. If, for some reason, you are unable to submit a manuscript through our online system, you are advised to submit it as via e-mail as attachment or may like to contact our Editorial Office by e-mail, telephone or fax and we will guide/help you in submitting your paper.
